College sends acceptance letters via the podcast

Wired Campus Blog reports that Fitchburg State College has taken the college acceptance letter to a new level. Beginning this month the school will send students that have been accepted to their college an e-mail that directs them to iTunes. From there the students will listen to a podcast in which the college's president will let them know that they have been accepted to their school. Makes me wonder what the podcast sounds like for those who didn’t get in (a really long dial-tone? – jk).

Big ups to Fitchburg State for finding an additional use for the podcast and at the same time getting potential students interested in the technology. While I think Fitchburg’s move is beneficial for students – wasn’t that big fat acceptance letter in the mail one of the best pieces of mail you ever received? I hope that the podcast will capture the same feeling.

I know people who got fired by email -I guess the podcast is trying to add a little of that 'human touch' - in some way..

Seems like they are adding an extra step to the whole process that they honestly could do without.

As an Internet marketer, I know that a business best practice is to keep the clicking of links to a minimum for your customers. They tend to lose interest easily.

Also, what about those who do not have iTunes already installed on their computer? They will have to go through the whole download and install process.

Michael you make a good point. I guess it turns out to be a good deal for Apple doesn't it :>.

Wow, little Fitchburg State? That's where Tina went to school. Who knew they'd be so innovative!

Creative use of the technology, but...I agree with you. That acceptance letter was the best piece of mail ever. A podcast can't hope to recreate that experience. I think this is an example of getting carried away with new technology. Sometimes it's just not appropriate.

Perhaps if they had a podcast about "Things to Get Excited About Now That You're Accepted!" or something. That would be neat. Or a congratulations from the President in addition to a letter (directions on how to download podcast included in packet).

Maybe some day the 'podcast' will be looked at in the same (nostalgic) way a 'tangible', hold-in-your hand piece of paper is to us today? I think the creative uses of the iTune/iPod format will only catch fire - some being very innovative in nature and some not - but at least ingenutiy and innovative thought lives strong. Thanks to Apple for supplying such a creative platform for us to experiment with and hopefully, to advance all our lives in some way.

This is a good step. Not a bad step and one for the marketers - fast brouadband reduces the frustration and there linking can add to the excitement (not all people belong in the same box). What is significant about this is that they are using multi-touch communication to an iTunes generation and an iTunes social group. The media is the message.
