Hyperlink Your Pitches

In other words, write your pitches blogging style. It saves room in your email and it looks cleaner. More importantly, it allows your intended recipient to access more information and it may even increase your chances of getting a response. It’s easier to gain information through hyper-linking your content than it is for your recipient to try to find it on their own. Because let’s face it, by the time a reporter has to Google your company or their products – they’ve probably moved onto the next email or deleted your pitch. For this reason, it also saves everyone time and a few email exchanges, and as we all know – time is money.

Check out the examples below (all companies and products are made up).

Pitch A: Non Hyperlinked

Hello xxx,

Surfer Technologies will be releasing a new version of their flagship product, Tryseries, this fall. In addition, Surfer will announce the results of their fifth annual customer survey analyzing current trends within the industry. Last year’s survey unveiled that customer’s preferred xyz over zyx.

Would you be interested in an advanced briefing of the news? If so, I can set you up with Jeff Smith, CEO and Founder of Surfer Technologies, for a teleconference briefing the week of August 25th. What dates and times work best for you?

Regards,
xxx

Sorry, Blake, but going to call you on this one.

How many reporters and newspapers are able to receive HTML emails? If they don't, then your hyperlinked pitch is useless. That's why I don't hyperlink pitches, but do put the URLs in parenthesis in my pitches.

No worries Jeremy, I'm here to learn - but educate me some more. If the recepient of my email cannot access live hyperlinks in my hyper-linked pitch - can they still access live URL? If not, is the URL solely for the recepient to cut and paste it into their Web browser?

Cut and paste, baby, cut and paste. So many newspapers don't allow HTML emails because of security issues.

This was really insightful and made me realize how email technology has impacted the way we pitch reporters.

Another interesting observation is that many reporters use GoodLink or Blackberry for to get email on their handhelds. The screen size only lets you read the first few lines of a pitch - so it is always good to get to the point right away to entice journalists to scroll down and ultimately secure their interest.
